TfWM in real time travel demand trial
ITS (UK) member Transport for West Midlands is undertaking an ambitious trial at this year’s Highways UK event, using exciting technology to underpin a data driven approach to travel demand management.
The Network Resilience Live Lab (NR Live Lab) project was named one of eight projects selected for the ADEPT SMART Places Live Labs Programme in January 2019. The project is improving operational capability of the Regional Transport Coordination Centre via innovation.
The pilot project has enabled the development of near to real time network data capture and pre-event planning tools to focus travel demand management techniques. These tools and techniques will be trialled at Highways UK and attendees can register their interest in being part of the trial here.
The Network Resilience Live Lab is trialling the approach to data driven travel demand management using targeted communication techniques, the application of agent-based modelling and the real-time monitoring of the transport network. Highways UK provides the perfect opportunity for the attendees to be part of the agent-based modelling functionality, developed by the project.
Transport for West Midlands, working with Immense Simulations, will trial the modelling using the approximate origins of attendees to the event, to attempt to understand the impact on the surrounding network. There will be monitoring of actual traffic volumes and public transport usage during the event. Learning from this trial will be used to refine the skills and tools developed during the NR Live Lab project for use in future events in the area.
This trial taking place at Highways UK is an exciting way to be part of the future of highway network management. To take part, please register your interest on this website.
