PTV adapts freight tool for school buses in Dubai
ITS (UK) member PTV Group has explained how it has used software usually used to optimise the logistics process to plan Dubai’s school bus system.
It says its plan was to schedule and optimise bus routes for all 80,000+ students to and from 80+ schools in Dubai, utilising 2800+ school buses – all
while complying with regulatory guidelines of trip duration and child safety.
PTV says it worked with Dubai’s School Transport Services (STS) to understand its business requirements and configure the system accordingly. Special attention was given to the safety of students at pick-up and drop-off points, as well as to maximum times they are allowed to spend on buses. It was important to use the optimal number of buses and limit travel distances, in an effort to ensure children’s well-being and safety and to reduce costs. This effort resulted in reduction of the daily run kilometers and dead runs, which in turn decreases fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Extensive testing and training were done and results measured before the
system was handed over to STS.
The result was that School Transport Services (STS) increased school bus capacity utilisation and reduced travel times, driving time, number of school buses deployed, and kilometres travelled. In addition, STS secured new business in the corporate travel sector by demonstrating efficiencies for route planning and resource requirements.
