CHAIR – Chris Hutchins (WSP) – temporary/interim
VICE CHAIR – Dave Weston (WSP) and Graham Hanson (DfT)
WELCOME to the Data Forum Members Page where you can find all the latest and essential information, media content and resources relating to this Forum.
Below are the details of all the Forum meetings and webinars that have taken place so far. Don’t forget we always welcome our input and feedback and open to offers of suggested content for future meetings.
The ITS Data Forum was established because we felt that although the current forums both within ITS UK and outside it cover data as part of their remit there wasn’t a specific place which talked about the tools, techniques, process and platforms underpinning the use of data across multiple ITS applications and use cases. As a result, the ITS Data forum was set up with the mission statement to
- ‘Inform and educate the industry regarding the tools, techniques, processes and platforms available to support in the provision of ITS services across multiple thematic areas selected as priorities by the ITS Data Forum.’
- To help in understanding our focus areas we have defined in the table below what we mean by tools, techniques, processes and platforms as well as proposed thematic areas of focus.
Components Definition
Tools The software and systems designed to collect, process, interpret (and interrogate), and present data. This includes data platforms which are complete solution for ingesting, processing, analysing and presenting data
Techniques The methods available to collect, process, interpret (and interrogate) and present data
Processes The steps and order taken to collect, manipulate, interpret (and interrogate), and present data
Thematic areas of focus
Platforms & Architecture Solutions available for ITS data and how they are designed based on a blueprint comprised of a number of components
Methodology and approaches to analysing data The methods available to collect, process, interpret (and interrogate) and present ITS data. Approaches include examples of where methods have been deployed on real world projects. This also includes lessons learned
Governance & Ethics The below are both in the context of ITS Data.
By data governance we mean a system of decision rights and accountabilities for information-related processes, executed according to agreed-upon models which describe who can take what actions with what information, and when, under what circumstances, using what methods. (Defined by the Data Governance Institute). This also includes data quality.
By data ethics we mean the exercise of studying and evaluating moral problems related to data (including generation, recording, curation, processing, dissemination, sharing and use), algorithms (including artificial intelligence, artificial agents, machine learning and robots) and corresponding practices (including responsible innovation, programming, hacking and professional codes), in order to formulate and support morally good solutions (e.g. right conducts or right values). (Defined by the Alan Turing Institute)
Security (including safety) By ITS data security we mean the practice of protecting digital information in relation to confidentiality, integrity and availability (service) throughout its entire lifecycle.
There are other thematic areas that the forum could focus on however those listed above are proposed as the initial areas of focus.

LAUNCH EVENT
The inaugural meeting of the ITS Data Forum took place on 27 October 2021 and covered the following areas:
- Who we are: An introduction of the Chair and Vice-Chairs
- What we stand for: Presentation of our vision, including mission statement, and how we will interact with existing forums/external ITS groups (like the Transport Data Initiative)
- Terms of Reference: How we will run ourselves
- Thematic Areas of Focus: Those which could be covered by the group and our priority list
- Plan for the coming months: What we want to achieve as a group
