DfT’s ITS policy lead to speak at ITS (UK) Summit

September 05 2019

The impressive line-up of speakers at the second annual ITS (UK) Summit in Coventry next month has been strengthened by the Department for Transport’s ITS Policy Lead, Darren Capes.

He’s agreed to give the closing remarks at the summit, which concentrates on policy, implementation and funding of technology solutions to improve mobility.  He will be at the event all day, and at the President’s Dinner the night before, chatting to delegates and hearing about issues in delivering ITS solutions, and how these have been overcome.

Capes is a particularly good choice of speaker, given that he has experience of both national and local government, having been Transport Systems Manager at the City of York for 17 years before taking on his role at DfT.  He is also an active member of the IET’s Transport Policy Panel and will therefore be able to see the issues from the different perspectives of those who are setting and separately delivering transport policy.

“Even though it is only in its second year, the ITS (UK) Summit is an important event in the calendar because it doesn’t spend time going into the nitty gritty of technology, but concentrates on actually getting it deployed on our transport network,” said Capes.  “I look forward to listening to the speakers and debates at the event, as well as chatting to the wide range of ITS professionals who are there, and then drawing conclusions that we at the Department can consider when we work on future policy.”

The speaker line-up at the Ricoh Arena also includes Mike Waters, Director of Policy, Strategy and Innovation at Transport for West Midlands, Lee Rowbotham – Senior Stakeholder Manager at Transport Focus and an Oxford-style adversarial debate about the future and viability of shared mobility featuring Dr Alastair McInroy, Senior Programme Manager, Technology Scotland and James Taylor, Managing Director, ShareNow taking on Andy Graham, Owner White Willow Consulting and Chair, ITS (UK) Connected Vehicles Forum and the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association’s Senior Policy Advisor Catherine Bowen.

The President’s Dinner and ITS (UK) Awards take place the night before at the same venue.
