2G/3G/4G/5G what does the future hold? Starting now should a designer starting out on a project now go for 2G, 3G or 4G modules or hang on for the imminent arrival of 5G for it to solve all of our problems?
It is generally assumed that the order of withdrawal will be 2G then 3G then at some point in the distant future 4G. But because 4G does everything that 3G does better and cheaper, then it is likely that the networks begin to scale back 3G availability as early as this year with the end of ‘committed support” in 2020.
For 2G, its larger cell size means it’s hard to beat for rural coverage. That means an extension in ‘committed support’ out to 2025. As for 5G the consensus seems to be 2020-2023 initial deployment to early adoption and 2023-2025 for mass adoption.
